Delhi's Monsoon Challenge: PWD's Battle Against Flooded Underpasses

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has taken definitive steps to mitigate the impending monsoon menace, which often leaves the city's underpasses flooded and chaotic. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been established, demanding the diversion of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses should water levels exceed six inches in an underpass.
The ongoing efforts are keenly focused on ensuring smooth traffic flow during Delhi's rainy season, typically starting in late June. With 70% of de-silting completed, around 194 locations have been identified as critical. The PWD is working in tandem with other agencies to manage flood control effectively.
This initiative forms part of a larger monsoon preparedness plan set to combat waterlogging challenges. The proactive approach underscores the importance of collaborative governance, with PWD Minister Parvesh Verma attributing past failings to poor legacy systems, sparking rebuttals from the Aam Aadmi Party concerning accountability.
